Mike Commons is an associate attorney at Wanzer Edwards, PC where he focuses his practice on family law, including mediation and representing the best interests of children as a Guardian ad Litem. Mr. Commons earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, minoring in Psychology and majoring in History, and was awarded a 2000 History Scholar Award. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University, Bloomington.
Mr. Commons has focused his professional experience on families. He began his career in private practice with an emphasis on family law before joining the Marion County Public Defender Agency representing parents facing Child in Need of Services (CHINS) and Termination of Parental Rights cases. Mr. Commons initiated a court-based mediation program for the Marion County, Superior Court, Juvenile Division, where he mediated over one-thousand CHINS cases.
Mr. Commons served the Indiana Supreme Court, Office of Court Services where he acted as a family law and Alternative Dispute Resolution subject matter authority and advised and staffed various judicial and multi-branch interdisciplinary governmental committees. He acted as the staff member for the Indiana Judicial Conference’s ADR Committee, supporting judges and their efforts to manage and maintain courts’ involvement with ADR across the state.
Mr. Commons is a member of the Indianapolis Bar Association Family Law Section and Alternative Dispute Resolution Section. He served as Chair of the Family Law Section in 2016, and will serve as Chair of the ADR section in 2022. He graduated from the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Bar Leader Series, Class XII, in 2015. He maintains professional memberships in the Indiana State Bar Association Juvenile and Family Law Section as well as the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section where he is a member of the ADR Council.
Mr. Commons has been a season ticket holder of the Indy Eleven since its founding and enjoys spending time with his family celebrating Indy and its surrounding communities.
